Woman Arrested For Allegedly Smuggling ‘Colos’ To Son On Death Row In Ogun Prison

The Nigerian Correctional Service has arrested a female visitor, Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi, for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected psychoactive substances into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Sowunmi was arrested at about 1:33pm on Friday, August 28, 2026, during a routine screening of visitors at the entrance of the custodial facility.

The Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service disclosed the arrest in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Olayinka.

According to the statement, Sowunmi had visited an inmate classified as being on death row when officers conducting the routine search discovered a sachet of Milo beverage allegedly containing substances suspected to be “Colos.”

The suspected substances were allegedly concealed inside the sachet of the popular beverage and were being taken into the facility for the inmate.

The correctional authorities immediately arrested the visitor and commenced preliminary investigation into the incident.

The NCoS said the arrest was part of efforts to maintain security and prevent prohibited items, including illicit substances, from finding their way into custodial centres.

The service added that it remained committed to ensuring that correctional facilities were secure and free from activities capable of compromising the safety of inmates, personnel and the facilities.

“Our custodial facilities exist to ensure public safety, reformation, and rehabilitation. We maintain an absolute zero-tolerance policy for drug trafficking or any illegal acts designed to compromise security.

“Attempts to introduce contraband into our facilities will be met with swift legal action,” the Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Abioye Kamoru Adesina was quoted as saying.

The case is expected to be further investigated, with the suspect likely to face appropriate legal action if the substances are confirmed to be illicit drugs.
