US Pushes to Rename Artificial Intelligence ‘Super Intelligence’ in Global Policy Debate

The United States is seeking international support to replace the term “artificial intelligence” (AI) with “super intelligence” (SI), as negotiations continue among members of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

US Treasury Undersecretary Erin Browne confirmed on Thursday, October 15, 2026, that Washington was pushing for the new terminology to be included in a joint statement by the International Monetary and Financial Committee.

The move follows President Donald Trump’s September 29 executive order directing federal agencies to use “Super Intelligence” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” in official communications, where legally permitted.

However, some IMF members have reportedly raised concerns about the proposed change. A possible compromise could see the committee use the broader term “new technology” instead.

The outcome of the negotiations is expected to become clearer when the committee releases its statement on Saturday, October 17.

While the US argues that the new term better reflects technological advancement, critics note that “superintelligence” traditionally describes hypothetical intelligence that surpasses human cognitive abilities, potentially creating confusion if used to describe AI generally.
