I Spent 10 Days in Ghana Without Seeing a Police Checkpoint— Kanayo O. Kanayo Calls for Police Reforms in Nigeria

Veteran Nollywood actor and lawyer Kanayo O. Kanayo has called for further reforms in the Nigeria Police Force after spending 10 days in Ghana, where he observed a different approach to road policing.

In a video shared online, the actor revealed that he and his colleagues travelled to different locations, including routes around Takoradi, without encountering a single police checkpoint.

According to him, although police officers were present on Ghanaian roads, they appeared to operate strategically without frequently stopping motorists.

Kanayo commended the Inspector-General of Police for ongoing reform efforts but urged him to address the conduct of officers whose actions damage the force’s reputation.

He also criticised the alleged profiling of young Nigerians who drive expensive cars as internet fraudsters, noting that many earn legitimate incomes through technology and other businesses.

Speaking as a lawyer, he acknowledged the police’s authority to conduct searches but questioned the practice of stopping motorists without reasonable justification.

The actor urged the police leadership to reduce unnecessary checkpoints, identify officers who should no longer be in service and improve public trust in the force.

While condemning criminal activities, Kanayo praised officers who genuinely protect lives and maintain security. He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force belongs to all Nigerians and called for a system that treats citizens with fairness and respect.
