Tinubu Insists Nigeria Will Never Return to Fuel Subsidy, Defends Economic Reforms

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s decision to permanently remove fuel subsidy, declaring that Nigeria will never return to the policy despite growing public concerns over the rising cost of living.

The President made this declaration on Friday, November 6, 2026, during a state reception held in his honour at the ARISE Palm Resort in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Defending the controversial policy, Tinubu argued that removing fuel subsidy was necessary to prevent Nigeria from sliding into economic bankruptcy.

He maintained that without the economic decisions taken by his administration, the naira could have lost virtually all its value.

The President also recalled that 27 out of Nigeria’s 36 state governors were struggling to meet salary obligations when he assumed office in May 2023.

Drawing an analogy from the biblical story of Moses and the Israelites’ departure from Egypt, Tinubu insisted that Nigeria must move forward rather than return to what he described as an unsustainable economic arrangement.

He maintained that there would be no reversal of the subsidy removal policy.

His remarks come amid continued public debate over subsidy removal, rising petrol prices and the economic hardship facing millions of Nigerians.
