A Catholic priest in Ecuador, Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, has died after a large crucifix fell on him while he was celebrating Mass.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Footage from the live-streamed service showed the heavy wooden crucifix mounted behind the altar suddenly detaching from the wall and striking the priest. Worshippers immediately rushed to his aid as the shocking incident unfolded.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death on Sunday, October 18, expressing condolences to his family, friends and fellow members of the Redemptorist religious congregation.
