1966 Coup: IBB’s Book Reopens Historical Debate as Ohanaeze’s ₦10trn Demand Raises Nnamdi Kanu Question.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo urged to include IPOB leader’s case in any proposed bargain with Federal Government.
The renewed debate over the 1966 military coup, following revelations attributed to former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), in his memoir, has added a new dimension to calls for historical redress, with the reported ₦10 trillion compensation demand by Ohanaeze Ndigbo raising questions about whether the unresolved case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu should form part of any negotiations with the Federal Government.
As discussions about the historical treatment of the Igbo people and demands for reparations gain attention, arguments are emerging that any comprehensive settlement must go beyond financial compensation to address longstanding political grievances and questions of justice affecting the South-East.
The argument for including Kanu in the proposed negotiations rests on the need for a broader approach to reconciliation.
Supporters of his release have consistently argued that resolving his case could help reduce tensions and open a path towards meaningful dialogue between the Federal Government and aggrieved groups in the South-East.
Ohanaeze should therefore consider making Kanu’s case an integral part of its engagement with the government, alongside its demands for an apology, reparations and measures to address alleged marginalisation. Any resolution of his case, however, must proceed through lawful and constitutionally recognised channels.
