Umuoba-Anam/Aguleri Crisis: Obi Appeals for Peace, Questions Mount Over Soludo’s Response.

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has appealed to the people of Umuoba-Anam and Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area to immediately end hostilities and embrace dialogue following renewed violence between the two communities.

Obi, in a statement on Sunday, expressed concern over the reported loss of lives, injuries and destruction of property arising from the longstanding land dispute. He urged the affected communities to choose reconciliation over retaliation and protect the lives and livelihoods of their people.

The renewed crisis has reportedly resulted in deaths and the destruction of houses, shops and other property. The Anambra State Government also ordered the closure of Otuocha Company Market following the violence.

The development, however, has raised questions about the role and response of the state government under Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo in preventing the escalation of the dispute and finding a lasting solution to the longstanding boundary disagreement.

Soludo has since directed the immediate cessation of hostilities and ordered the deployment of security agencies to the affected communities to protect lives and property and prevent further escalation.

He has also summoned stakeholders from both communities to an emergency peace and security meeting scheduled for October 7 in Awka, where the root causes of the dispute are expected to be addressed.

The question now is whether the latest intervention will go beyond immediate security measures to produce a durable settlement capable of preventing another outbreak of violence.

With the dispute having persisted for years and reportedly requiring previous interventions, stakeholders are expected to use the forthcoming meeting to address the underlying boundary and land claims rather than merely manage each fresh outbreak.

For the people of Umuoba-Anam and Aguleri, the immediate priority remains the protection of lives, restoration of normal economic activity and the creation of a credible mechanism for resolving the disputed claims peacefully.
