Two Police Officers Killed as Suspected Herders Ambush DPO’s Escort in Benue

Two police officers have been killed after suspected armed herders attacked the convoy of the Divisional Police Officer in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The incident happened on Monday as the DPO was returning to Ayilamo from Makurdi, where he had gone on official duty.

A community source told PUNCH that the officers, who were newly deployed Mobile Police personnel, were attacked while heading out to escort the DPO back to Ayilamo.

“At about 18:00 hours on Monday, some individuals identified as newly deployed Mobile Police officers to Ayilamo community were attacked and killed,” the source said.

The source added that the officers were on their way to meet the DPO when they came under attack.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the incident, saying two officers in the DPO’s entourage were killed.

“The DPO came to Makurdi to carry some things and while going back to Ayilamo, he was attacked and lost two of his men in the attack,” Aondongu said.

The latest attack comes days after Ayilamo was attacked on Thursday by suspected armed herders, leaving four police officers and seven residents dead.
