One person has been confirmed dead after a four-storey uncompleted building collapsed at Independence Layout in Enugu State on Sunday morning.
The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, said the incident occurred at about 6am on September 13, 2026.
According to the agency, its Director-General, Zubaida Umar, immediately directed the NEMA Enugu Operations Office to send an Emergency Rescue Team to the scene and coordinate the rescue operation with other relevant agencies.
When the team arrived, it was informed that some people were trapped beneath the rubble.
An excavator was subsequently brought in to help clear the debris and reach those trapped inside the collapsed structure.
NEMA said one male victim was recovered dead from the rubble at about 11:20am.
“As of 11:20 a.m., the joint rescue team successfully recovered the lifeless body of one male victim from the collapsed structure,” the agency said.
Rescue efforts were still ongoing as of the time NEMA issued its statement, with emergency responders continuing to search the debris for anyone who may still be trapped.
“Rescue operations are still ongoing as emergency responders continue to search through the debris to ascertain whether other victims remain trapped beneath the rubble,” NEMA added.
The rescue operation is being coordinated by NEMA alongside the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, the Nigeria Police Force, the Enugu State Fire and Rescue Service, the Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority and the Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
The cause of the building collapse had not been established as of the time of the report.
