NNPC Restricts ₦66/Litre Petrol Discount to Fuel App Users, Sparks Concerns

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has restricted access to its ₦66-per-litre petrol discount to motorists who make payments through its mobile application.

The announcement follows the Federal Government’s introduction of a 30-day petrol discount initiative aimed at easing the burden of rising fuel prices on Nigerians, particularly commercial transport operators.

According to NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, the discount is part of the Independence Anniversary promotion, initially scheduled to run from October 1 to 7, 2026. The promotion has now been extended until October 31.

Odeh explained that limiting access to the discount through the NNPC Fuel App would help prevent abuse, ensure proper monitoring and guarantee that the intended beneficiaries enjoy the offer.

He added that the initiative was also designed to encourage more customers to adopt the application and improve their overall experience.

However, the payment requirement has raised concerns among Nigerians, with some questioning how motorists without smartphones or the ability to make digital payments would benefit from the promotion.

The development has sparked discussions about the accessibility of the discount, especially for low-income earners and commercial drivers who are expected to benefit from the temporary relief.
