NELFUND Moves to Block Students From Taking Loans While Parents Pay School Fees

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is moving to prevent students from benefiting from its student loan scheme while their parents or guardians are already paying their school fees.

The proposed measure is aimed at strengthening the administration of the education loan programme and ensuring that financial assistance reaches students who genuinely need support to pursue their education.

Under the initiative, NELFUND intends to address situations where students apply for and receive loans despite having their tuition fees covered by their parents or guardians.

The development could lead to closer scrutiny of applications and students’ financial circumstances as the agency seeks to improve transparency and accountability in the management of public funds allocated to the scheme.

NELFUND was established to provide financial assistance to eligible Nigerian students in tertiary institutions, helping them meet tuition and other approved educational expenses.

The move is expected to generate discussions among students, parents and education stakeholders, particularly over how eligibility will be determined and what measures will be introduced to prevent misuse of the loan scheme.
