The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu has reportedly approved a petition by the family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, requesting a fresh and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The development was disclosed by the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026.
The lawyer clarified that the police investigation remains ongoing despite the recent dismissal of a separate case by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to Ogungbe, the Aloba family submitted its petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, while the petition was formally received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7,
The family reportedly raised concerns about inconsistencies in the earlier investigation and called for a detailed forensic reconstruction of the events surrounding Mohbad’s death.
The lawyer said the IGP subsequently approved the petition and directed that it be forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action.
The matter was then assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau, who began a fresh investigation.
Ogungbe further disclosed that a representative of the Aloba family had been invited by the new investigative team and had already engaged with the officers handling the case.
He said the family has continued to cooperate with investigators and monitor the progress of the renewed investigation.
The clarification came after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25, 2026.
However, the family’s lawyer stressed that the dismissed suit was unrelated to the petition submitted to the IGP.
He explained that the suit was neither filed by the Aloba family nor initiated with the family’s approval.
The family therefore appealed to the public not to confuse the court’s decision with the separate police investigation already underway following its petition.
The Aloba family has urged the police to handle the fresh investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism, while thoroughly examining all relevant individuals, evidence and circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.
