FLAMINGOS SOAR INTO U-17 WORLD CUP QUARTER-FINALS, FACE VENEZUELA NEXT.

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mexico.

The Nigerian youngsters delivered an impressive performance in Thursday’s Round of 16 encounter at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, scoring twice before surviving a late Mexican comeback to advance to the last eight.

Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute, capitalising on a defensive mistake before driving into the penalty area and firing past Mexican goalkeeper Ania Lopez.

The goal gave Nigeria a deserved advantage after both sides created opportunities during an evenly contested opening period.

The Flamingos maintained their momentum after the break, continuing to put pressure on their opponents as they sought to strengthen their grip on the match.

Their persistence paid off in the 71st minute when Mary Dunstan doubled Nigeria’s lead. The midfielder reacted quickly after the Mexican goalkeeper failed to clear the ball cleanly, sending a powerful effort into the net to make it 2-0.

Mexico, however, refused to surrender and mounted a late challenge in search of a comeback. Emily Delgado eventually pulled one goal back in the 90th minute of added time, setting up a tense finish.

Despite the late pressure, Nigeria held firm defensively to preserve their advantage and secure qualification for the quarter-finals.

Umejiaku’s outstanding contribution earned her the Player of the Match award, recognising her decisive role in Nigeria’s progression.

The victory continues the Flamingos’ impressive recovery in the tournament following a difficult opening group-stage defeat to Poland.

Nigeria subsequently defeated Puerto Rico 2-0 before producing one of the competition’s notable results with a 3-1 victory over defending champions North Korea in their final group match.

That result boosted the team’s confidence and secured their passage into the knockout stage, where they have now eliminated Mexico to move closer to another semi-final appearance.

Head coach Busari has praised the players’ determination, teamwork and tactical discipline, expressing confidence in their ability to compete against the remaining teams.

Attention now turns to Sunday’s quarter-final showdown against Venezuela, who secured their place in the last eight after defeating Germany 1-0.

The South American side will provide another challenging test for Nigeria, with both teams aiming to secure a place in the semi-finals.

For the Flamingos, the immediate priority will be maintaining their attacking sharpness while improving their concentration in the closing stages, particularly after conceding a late goal against Mexico.

Nigeria previously finished third at the 2022 edition of the tournament in India. Their current campaign presents another opportunity to reach the semi-finals and challenge for the title.

With momentum building following consecutive victories over North Korea and Mexico, the Nigerian side will hope to carry its confidence into the encounter with Venezuela and continue its pursuit of a memorable World Cup campaign.
