The Enugu State Government has responded to allegations linking it to the October 10 incidents involving the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC) at Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the party’s state secretariat.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the government’s findings indicated that the party attempted to hold a political rally at the airport without approval from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), leading to a confrontation with airport officials and security personnel.
On the reported shooting at the NDC secretariat, Onyia confirmed that one person sustained a gunshot injury and received medical treatment. He denied reports of fatalities, adding that police investigations into the incident were ongoing.
The state government also dismissed allegations that Governor Peter Mbah’s Chief Security Officer supervised the shooting, claiming he was attending another public event alongside the governor at the time.
Additionally, the government alleged that some opposition elements were planning to recruit armed thugs to disrupt the state’s peace ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The administration maintained that it remained committed to protecting lives, preserving peace and respecting citizens’ rights to freedom of association and peaceful political participation.
It further insisted that political opposition would not be intimidated, while warning that violence and threats to public security would not be tolerated.
The incidents have raised concerns about political tensions in Enugu State as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. The police investigation is expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the reported shooting.
