BREAKING: Ebonyi Assembly Approves New Pay Structure for LG Officials, Chairmen to Earn ₦450,000 Monthly
ABAKALIKI — The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has passed a bill reviewing the monthly remuneration of local government and development centre political office holders in the state.
The bill, which amends Schedules A and C of Law No. 004 of 2008, as amended in 2015, was passed during plenary on Wednesday at the Legislative Complex, Nkaliki Road, Abakaliki.
The amendment followed a letter transmitted to the Assembly by Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, with the review principally targeting the remuneration of political office holders at the grassroots. The bill was subsequently passed unanimously by the lawmakers.
Under the revised Schedule A, the monthly remuneration was fixed at:
Local Government Chairman — ₦450,000
Vice Chairman — ₦400,000
Supervisor — ₦230,000
Secretary — ₦240,000
Special Assistant to Chairman — ₦165,000
Similarly, under Schedule C, the new monthly remuneration stands at:
Legislative Leader — ₦300,000
Deputy Leader — ₦250,000
Councillor — ₦230,000
Development Centre Coordinator — ₦277,000
Management Committee Member — ₦226,000.
Leading the debate, the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, said the amendment was aimed at reviewing the remuneration applicable to the affected grassroots office holders.
Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Moses Ije Odunwa, said the revised structure was part of efforts to strengthen grassroots administration and improve the welfare of public and political office holders.
The Assembly thereafter directed the Clerk, Mrs Edene Uche Blessing, to communicate the passage of the bill to Governor Nwifuru.
The development comes against the backdrop of the Nwifuru administration’s stated emphasis on local government administration and the welfare of workers and retirees. In August 2025, the state government announced the commencement of payment of gratuities to retired local government staff from 1996 to date.
For Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, the latest legislative action is another development his supporters are likely to point to as evidence of an administration placing increased attention on grassroots governance and the welfare of those serving at the local level.
