Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has sparked conversation after speaking about what he described as a double standard in how society treats the sexual history of men and women.
In a video shared online, Agu argued that a man could have sexual relationships with several women and still find a partner willing to marry him, while a woman with fewer past partners could face rejection because of her sexual history.
According to him, the social consequences of sexual behaviour can differ based on gender, with a woman’s past sometimes becoming a major consideration in marriage while a man’s past may attract less scrutiny.
Agu also used drug use to illustrate his broader point about consequences and privilege. He noted that people with greater financial resources may have access to treatment or rehabilitation when things go wrong, while those without similar resources may struggle to deal with the consequences.
He therefore urged people to think carefully before
making decisions, stressing that wisdom involves understanding the consequences of one’s choices and recognising what one can or cannot afford to do.
