Republican Congressman Byron Donalds has made history after defeating Democratic candidate David Jolly in Florida’s gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black governor in the state’s 180-year history.
Donalds, a staunch ally of President Donald Trump, won the closely contested November 3, 2026, election, according to projections by major U.S. media outlets. His victory will see him succeed outgoing Governor Ron DeSantis, who is leaving office after reaching his term limit.
The election marks a significant milestone in American political history, as Donalds is also set to become the first Black Republican elected governor in the United States.
A three-term congressman representing Southwest Florida, Donalds secured the Republican nomination with Trump’s endorsement and campaigned on issues including affordability, property taxes, homeowners’ insurance and education.
His Democratic opponent, David Jolly, a former Republican congressman who switched parties, focused his campaign on the rising cost of living, housing affordability and the need for political change.
Despite the historic significance of his victory, Donalds largely focused on his conservative political agenda rather than making race the centre of his campaign.
His election also extends Republican control of Florida’s governor’s office, which the party has held since 1999.
Donalds is expected to assume office in January 2027, ushering in a new chapter in Florida’s political history.
His victory has drawn national attention, with supporters celebrating the historic breakthrough while political observers continue to assess what his leadership could mean for the state and the wider Republican Party.
