The Cross River State Government has announced plans to commence night landing operations at Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar from November 1, 2026, to accommodate the expected increase in passenger traffic ahead of the annual Carnival Calabar.
Under the arrangement, the airport is expected to receive flights until 10pm daily, giving visitors more flexibility as they travel to the state for the festive season.
Governor Bassey Otu disclosed the development as his administration intensifies preparations for the 2026 carnival, which attracts tourists, cultural performers and entertainment enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.
The state government is also working to increase flight services operated by Cally Air to accommodate the anticipated rise in passenger numbers during the period.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve transportation access, boost tourism and strengthen Calabar’s reputation as a major destination for cultural festivals and entertainment.
The governor has projected that the city could welcome more than one million visitors during this year’s carnival, creating opportunities for businesses across the hospitality, transportation, food, retail and entertainment sectors.
The extension of airport operations is expected to make travelling to Calabar more convenient, particularly for visitors arriving later in the day.
As preparations continue, travellers are advised to confirm flight schedules and arrival times with their airlines before making travel arrangements.
The 2026 Carnival Calabar is expected to feature colourful street parades, cultural displays, music, dance and other activities showcasing the rich heritage of Cross River State.
